Hip-hop take on a folk tale
By Mary Lendzion
The Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance has crafted a hip-hop take on the folk-tale classic "Stone Soup" titled "Stone Soup - A Wrap Opera." At the core are hungry strangers who are able to persuade people in a town to give them food. This version features a mix of urban America, hip-hop and rap. It's part of Wayne State University's Summer Children's Theatre program. The event takes place at 10:30 a.m., Thursday-Friday, June 26-27; and 2 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, June 28-29, at the Hilberry Theatre.

Summer theater program brings 'Stone Soup' to life
The Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance at Wayne State University is ready for its second season of Summer Children's Theatre featuring a hip-hop reimagining of the folktale "Stone Soup." Told in variations across many cultures, "Stone Soup" is about an outsider who persuades the people of an ungenerous and suspicious town to provide them with food. Here, a tramp using nothing but his wits, some wiliness and a stone gets a group of battling siblings to cooperate, together accomplishing what they could not achieve individually. "This is a simple story about cooperation," said the production's director, John Wolf, chair of the department of theatre and dance. "We hope that 'Stone Soup' provides students with information about the benefits of learning to work together." The production will play at the Hilberry Theatre at 10:30 a.m. June 19, 20, 26 and 27 and at 2 p.m. June 28 and 29, providing an opportunity for children of all ages to enjoy "Stone Soup: A Wrap Opera." "Stone Soup" began touring free to Detroit Public Schools on May 14. The 40-minute show will reach more than 6,500 students at 25 different schools by June 25. The tour to Detroit Public Schools is part of an ongoing commitment to educational outreach by the Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance.
