"Broadway legend calls Birmingham home"
by Julie Yolles
Locally, it's pretty much six degrees of Maggie Allesee. The dynamic philanthropist and Bloomfield Hills resident endowed Wayne State University's Theatre and Dance Department, and now her name adorns the masthead. So it was very fitting, then, that the Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance rolled out the red carpet for this year's Apple Award Recipient. After 70 years in New York City, Broadway legend Elaine Stritch, 88, has hung up her many signature hats, performed her last cabaret show at the Café Carlyle and moved home to be with her family. "I don't want to retire, I just want to slow down, go to lunch and sit by the pool," Stritch told the crowd at the Hilberry Theatre.
