Couples clash in absurdist comedy

An example of the genre known as Theatre of the Absurd, Tina Howe's "Birth and After Birth" takes every aspect of the lives of four adults and one child to ludicrous extremes. Director Julie Moriarty, a PhD candidate at Wayne State University, and a fine cast of undergraduate actors give us a very well-crafted and executed production of this difficult comedy. The play continues through Jan. 25 in the Studio Theatre, downstairs at the Hilberry.

WSU Studio Theater continues strong season with Tina Howe's "Birth and After Birth"
by Sue Suchyta

Wayne State University's Studio Theater continues its strong season with Tina Howe's Birth and After Birth, a delightful absurdist comedy in which a couple trying to impress another couple with their parenting success actually ignore their own child amidst their intense verbal one-upmanship. Audiences will see themselves as well as friends and family in the fast-paced play that pokes fun at the human foibles of parenting a child in the competitive computer age. Birth and After Birth continues its run at WSU's Studio Theater at 8 p.m. Jan. 23, 24 and 25 in the lower level of the Hilberry Theatre.
