Light and joy: Wayne State's latest musical 'The Prom' shines with heart, acceptance
"We are all different, and that’s what makes us amazing." — “The Prom”
Wayne State University’s Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance invites audiences to celebrate love, acceptance, and the power of community with its upcoming production of “The Prom.”
This joyful and uplifting musical — based on a true story — follows the story of a high school student who just wants to take her girlfriend to prom ... and the Broadway stars who rally behind her cause. Directed by Eric Van Tielen, this dynamic production runs from March 28 through April 6 on the STAGE at WSU’s Hilberry Gateway.
With music by Matthew Sklar, lyrics by Chad Beguelin, and a book by Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin, “The Prom” tells the story of four Broadway actors looking to revamp their public image by helping a small-town high schooler fight for her right to bring her girlfriend to prom. This hilarious and poignant musical celebrates love, self-expression, and the power of community, making it a must-see event for audiences of all backgrounds.
Wayne State’s College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts’ production of “The Prom” uniquely showcases the talents of both undergraduate and graduate students, from lead roles to the creative team.
“This production highlights the immense talent within our department,” Van Tielen said. “It’s a joyful, inspiring, and necessary story for today’s world, and I’m incredibly proud of how our students are bringing it to life.”
Among the standout cast members is Jackie Roach, a third-year BA Theatre major, playing the role of Emma. “Emma’s journey of self-confidence and acceptance is something I deeply relate to,” said Roach. “I hope audiences see this show as a beacon of light and joy.”
Beyond the performances, “The Prom” will feature several community-driven initiatives:
Queer Prom on March 29 from 10:30 p.m. until midnight
Hosted with Wayne State’s Center for Gender and Sexuality, this event marks the kickoff to Wayne State Pride Week (March 31 through April 4) and features a special performance by local drag queen, Jadein Black.
Prom Closet Donation Drive runs from March 28 through April 6
In partnership with Jackets for Jobs and Comerica Bank, audience members are encouraged to donate formal wear for students in need. The donation drive extends beyond the show’s run, with items being collected at Comerica Bank locations until April 18. Donated items will be distributed at the Samaritan Center to ensure all students can attend their prom with confidence. All items can be donated from March 28 through April 6 in the designated bin in the Lobby of the Hilberry Gateway.
Performance Schedule:
- Friday, March 28, at 8 p.m.
- Saturday, March 29, at 2 and 8 p.m.
- Wednesday, April 2, at 2 p.m.

At its heart, “The Prom” is about love, inclusion, and standing up for what’s right.
