Learn About The Go-Go's

Who are the Go Go’s?

The Go Go’s (originally named The Misfits) are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1978. The band consisted of Belinda Carlise (vocalist), Jane Weidlin (guitar, vocals), Charlotte Chaffey (lead guitar, keys), Gina Schock (drums), and Kathy Valentine (bass). The band topped the Billboard album charts in 1982, which was a first for an all-female band writing their own materials, playing their own instruments, and even having an all-female manage team and rodeos. The band’s 1981 debut album Beauty and the Beat is considered to have broken barriers and paved the way for many other new American acts. The album stayed at the top of the charts for six consecutive weeks, selling more than two million copies, and making it one of the most successful debut albums of all time. This album also yielded two of The Go Go’s biggest hits, “Our Lips Are Sealed” and “We Got The Beat” which also happen to be songs featured in Head Over Heels. In 1982 the band released their second album Vacation which features the hit song by the same name that’s also in Head Over Heels. Two years later, their third album Talk Show was the most musically ambitious album and had two songs that made the Top 40 hits. One of them is the song that the musical is named after: Head Over Heels.  The band broke up in May1985 after Jane Weidlin left the band a few months prior but have reconvened several times through the 1990s and beyond, including coming together to perform at a concert celebrating their new Broadway Musical, Head Over Heels. The musical featuring seventeen songs from the Go Go’s ran on Broadway at the Hudson Theater from 2018 - 2019. The Go Go’s are widely considered the most successful all female rock band of all time.
