"New play 'Detroit' misses the essence of Motown"
by John Monaghan
The Hilberry team earns an A for effort in all departments. Pegi Marshall-Amundsen's set fashions familiar backyards and conjures a nifty bit of stage magic near the end. Heather DeFauw's lighting design beautifully evokes several times of day, as the show is set in both daylight and dark. Veteran director Lavinia Hart does her best to make the show resonate with Detroiters, but doesn't overplay local connections.

"City plays Anytown, USA, in Hilberry's dark comedy 'Detroit'"
by Michael Hodges
A review of Lisa D'Amour's "Detroit," which opens Friday at Wayne State's Hilberry Theatre, notes that the production isn't really about Detroit. It's bigger than that. It's about Anytown, USA - or at least, any town close to a big, industrial city in the Midwest. D'Amour will be at the Hilberry for performances Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, and will take questions afterward.

"Hilberry scores a coup with new play Detroit"
by John Monaghan
Detroit, which opened at Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre in 2010 and is in previews Off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons in New York, will have its Detroit premiere at the Hilberry Theatre in January. The production will be directed by local theater veteran Lavinia Hart. Landing Detroit was a huge coup for the Hilberry, the graduate theater company at Wayne State University that is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. "Of course, the Hilberry is known for its classical work, and this is a completely contemporary play," says Hilberry artistic director Michael Barnes. "It goes along with the idea that we can celebrate our 50 years but we must also look forward."

"Detroit on Hilberry sked"
by B.J. Hammerstein
Wayne State University's Hilberry Theatre will produce playwright Lisa D'Amour's much-buzzed-about 2010 play "Detroit" next season. The Hilberry production will run in repertory Jan. 11-April 15. It replaces a previously announced production of Molière's "A Doctor in Spite of Himself." Though the play is titled "Detroit," it could be set in many other U.S. cities. Still, it's a story that will resonate locally, says director Lavinia Hart. "We're a city bereft of revenue, neighborhoods, opportunity. We live in a city of a dwindling work force, including firefighters and police officers. But Detroiters are survivors and their sense of humor is gritty and wry," says Hart.
