"The Hilberry gives us a good laugh at Shakespeare's famous tragedies"
by Patty Nolan
Wayne State University's Hilberry Theatre tackles Shakespeare's tragedies head on with its production of Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet) by award-winning Canadian playwright Ann-Marie MacDonald. It's a fast-paced play that blends two parts Shakespearean tragedy with one part modern day fantasy to come up with a delightful comedy cocktail. Critic Patty Nolan writes: "Whether you love Shakespeare or don't get what the fuss is all about, there's much to enjoy in this third play in the Hilberry Theatre's 50th anniversary season."

Wayne State University's Hilberry theatre stages Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet), opening Nov. 16 and running in repertory through Jan. 9. In Ann-Marie MacDonald's comedic play, a timid young English literature professor theorizes that Shakespeare's tragedies Othello and Romeo and Juliet originally were comedies. Thrown into her own subconscious mind and into the two plays, she goes on a journey of self-discovery. [subscription access only article]
