"'Low Winter Sun' star Ruben Santiago-Hudson feels connected to Detroit"
by Julie Hinds
A feature story profiles actor Ruben Santiago-Hudson, star of the new AMC series "Low Winter Sun" that airs at 10 p.m. Sundays. Santiago-Hudson, who portrays Detroit Police Lieutenant Charles Dawson, has a deep understanding of Detroit. Back in 1979, he came to Wayne State University to pursue a master of fine arts degree. After graduating, he ended up staying until 1983 and running a theater company he formed with some of his colleagues. He made his Broadway debut in "Jelly's Last Jam" opposite Gregory Hines. He won a Tony for acting in August Wilson's "Seven Guitars" and earned an Obie this year for directing a revival of Wilson's "The Piano Lesson." He also has scored big as a writer with his autobiographical play "Lackawanna Blue." It was adapted for an HBO movie starring himself, Rosie Perez, Jeffrey Wright and fellow Wayne State alum S. Epatha Merkerson. Eligible for scholarships at Yale, New York University and the University of Michigan, he says he chose Wayne State for the classical and repertory aspects of Hilberry Theatre. In 2003, Santiago-Hudson was honored by Wayne State for his achievement in theater.

by Eric Lacy
Actor Ruben Santiago-Hudson, a cast member of AMC's Detroit-themed police drama Low Winter Sun, made it clear Monday night that he's got plenty of love for The D. Santiago-Hudson, a 56-year-old Wayne State University alum, drew a round of applause during a preview event of the show's first episode when he delivered his unprovoked defense of the Motor City and its people. Santiago-Hudson also told the crowd he expected to speak at Wayne State when he's in Detroit for more work, and practically guaranteed that Low Winter Sun will be a show that's good enough to earn a second season from AMC.
