About the show: As the weather cools down, our dancers are warming up for the December Dance Concert on the Stage at the Hilberry Gateway. Be inspired by the creative talent, agility, and grace of our students as they present contemporary dance pieces in a variety of style. The December Dance Concert features distinguished guest artists', faculty, and student works developed throughout the semester. A special closing to the year, this marks the first December Dance Concert in our new performance venue, the Hilberry Gateway.

The Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance is thrilled to host the December Dance Concert Pre-Glow. Get your premiere photo taken by our professional photographer, enjoy light refreshments, and sit down for a Q & A with our distinguished panel. Renowned guest artist Celia Benvenutti will join our BFA Dance student choreographers for an open conversation hosted by Associate Department Chair Jessica Rajko and Eisenhower Dance Detroit.

Guest Artists:

Crystal Frazier

Crystal Frazier, a native of New Jersey, holds an Associate Degree in dance from The University of the Arts and a Master of Fine Arts in choreography from Jacksonville University. Currently, she is a director for Dancers Inc. competition and convention in N.J.

Frazier is a former senior member with the world-renowned Rennie Harris Puremovement (RHPM). She has performed and taught nationally and internationally with RHPM, including in the Middle East and Central Asia. She is also the former co-founder of “Montazh,” an all-female Hip Hop dance company based in Philadelphia, Pa., and former co-founder of Hope College’s H2 dance company.

Frazier's industry performance credits include: MTV and BET, VH1's Vogue Fashion awards, BET awards, Italy tour with Kathy Sledge, Nike All-Star showcase, among others. She was the featured dancer and choreographer for Grammy Award-winning artist Jill Scott’s “Big Beautiful Tour." On film, she made an appearance in the movie Beloved, TV show Monk as well as in commercials. Recently, she was a part of a tour for the Dance International Workshop program teaching fundamentals of Hip Hop street dance in Nagoya, Osaka, Fukuoka and Tokyo.

Celia Benvenutti is an Afro-Latina dance artist, native Detroiter and Howard University alum. She has been studying dance for the past 25 years under the tutelage of Madame Penny Godboldo, lecturer of dance at the University of Michigan and Certified Dunham Technique Dance instructor. Celia’s background includes extensive training in the Dunham Technique, Classical Ballet, Modern (Horton and Graham), Jazz, Traditional African and Afro-Caribbean dances. As a certified Dunham Technique instructor, she has attended the International Katherine Dunham Seminar and Certification Workshop/Lab for the past 20 years. She has studied with Katherine Dunham, Venoy Aikens, Walter Nicks, Ruby Streate, Theo Jamison, Rachel Tavernier, Keith Williams, and Haitian Master Louinis Louines. She has taught dance in Detroit, Washington, D.C. and New York. Celia was principal dancer in Taurus Broadhurst Dance: A Contemporary African Company located in Washington D.C. from 2012-2016. She is currently a member of Ozzie Rivera’s RicanStruction, a Detroit Puerto Rican folkloric dance troupe. Recently, Celia was awarded the Collective Sweat Dance Detroit’s local choreographic residency for Spring 2020 and the 2020 Gilda Snowden Emerging Artist Award for dance and choreography.

Joshua Peugh

Joshua L. Peugh (he/him) is the Founder and Artistic Director of Dark Circles Contemporary Dance and Co-founder of Fair Assembly. A graduate of Southern Methodist University and a former dancer with Universal Ballet (under the direction of Oleg Vinogradov), he has created work for festivals in Asia, Europe, and North America, winning awards for his choreography in South Korea, Japan, Canada, and the USA. He was the recipient of the Grand Prize at the McCallum Theatre's 18th Annual Choreography Festival, and Dance Magazine chose him as one of their "25 to Watch." Joshua served as choreographer for legendary soprano Kathleen Battle's concert Underground Railroad - A Spiritual Journey and was the 2018 recipient of the Natalie Skelton Award for Artistic Excellence. He has created over 50 new works for Amy Seiwert’s Imagery, BalletX, Ballet Memphis, The Big Muddy Dance Company (My Dear Watson), BODYTRAFFIC, Bruce Wood Dance Project, Collage Dance Collective, Company E, Dallas Black Dance Theatre, Dallas Theater Center (Colossal), Dance Lab NY, DanceWorks Chicago, Eisenhower Dance, Korea National Contemporary Dance Company, MADCO, METdance, Missouri Contemporary Ballet, Tulsa Ballet, Verb Ballets (Romeo and Juliet), WaterTower Theater (The Ballad of Little Jo), and Whim W'Him, among others.
