Theatre Degree programs
The Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance offers a nationally ranked performing arts program. We offer undergraduate and graduate programs in the heart of Detroit's diverse arts scene. Wayne State University's Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance serves students as a nexus of performance, production, and research in the fields of dance, theatre, and performance studies. The department provides a wide variety of degree programs that allow students the flexibility to study these disciplines broadly or to concentrate more specifically in performance, design, or management.
The Theatre and Dance Programs prepares students for professional careers as performing artists, choreographers, designer/technicians, stage managers, dance teachers, and informed audience members within the urban, metropolitan context of Wayne State University. The Department is committed to providing our students the opportunity to develop within their disciplines through an extensive performance program that includes eighteen theatrical productions and dance concerts, four community outreach performance companies that target the city schools, Summer Children's Theatre designed to bring affordable quality summer entertainment to the youth of Detroit, and Complexions Summer Ballet Intensive.
Undergraduate Theatre Studies
The undergraduate program offers a Bachelor in Fine Arts in Theatre with a concertation in Performance, Design and Technology, or Stage Management and a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre, which is designed for students who wish to hone job skills with challenging courses in all aspects of the theatre. The BFA in Theatre is an intensive pre-professional program designed to provide a broad understanding of your chosen discipline. Students can also minor in Africana Theatre and Dance, Design and Technology, Musical Theatre, Theatre, or Theatre Management. If you are unsure, you may choose the exploratory track until you decide what is best for you. Honor tracks are also available for students interested in advanced studies. Students also have the opportunity to study abroad in Siena, Italy and Moscow, Russia.
Graduate Theatre Studies
The graduate programs offers a Master of Fine Arts in Performance, Scene Design, Costume Design, Lighting Design, Theatre Management, or Stage Management. The MFA is a three-year intensive practical training program based on professional standards with opportunities inside and outside the classroom. We also offer a Master of Arts degree for those who wish to continue honing communication skills related to the fields of theatre and dance in Theatre and Dance (Teaching Artistry) and Arts Administration (Theatre Management, Music Business, Gallery Management). Students will also have the opportunity to study abroad in Siena, Italy and Moscow, Russia.
