Theatre Degree programs
The Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance offers a nationally ranked performing arts program. We engage, educate, and empower diverse student artists through the rigorous study, practice, and production of theatre to enrich Detroit and global communities. We offer undergraduate and graduate programs in the heart of Detroit's diverse arts scene. Wayne State University's Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance serves students as a nexus of performance, production, and research in the fields of dance, theatre, and performance studies. The department provides a wide variety of degree programs that allow students the flexibility to study these disciplines broadly or to concentrate more specifically in performance, design, or management.
The undergraduate program offers a Bachelor in Fine Arts with a concertation in Performance, Design and Technical Theatre, or Stage Management. The B.F.A. is an intensive pre-professional program designed to provide a broad understanding in your chosen discipline. For those students who wish to hone job skills with challenging courses in all aspects of the theatre, we offer a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre. Students can also minor in Africana Theatre and Dance, Theatre Design and Technology, Musical Theatre, Theatre, or Theatre Management. If you are unsure, you may choose the exploratory track until you decide what is best for you. Honor tracks are also available for students interested in advanced studies. Students will also have the opportunity to study abroad in Siena, Italy and Moscow, Russia.
The graduate programs offers a Master of Fine Arts in Performance, Scene Design, Costume Design, Lighting Design, Theatre Management, or Stage Management. The MFA is a three-year intensive practical training program based on professional standards with opportunities inside and outside the classroom. We also offer a Master of Arts degree for those who wish to continue honing communication skills related to the fields of theatre and dance in Theatre and Dance (Teaching Artistry) and Arts Administration (Theatre Management, Music Business, Gallery Management). Students will also have the opportunity to study abroad in Siena, Italy and Moscow, Russia.
