Dr. RAS Michael Courtney
Dr. RAS Michael Courtney is a dance practioner/researcher/educator who is currently a Lecturer at Wayne State University. RAS Mikey holds a BFA in Modern Dance from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, an MA in Ethnochoreology and doctorate from the University of Limerick in Ireland in Arts Practice research. His thesis Bridging Horizons: Embodied Cultural Understanding Through the Development and Presentation of Ethio-Modern Dance, explore his practice as his main methodology and embodiment as a central theoretical underpinning. His works explore meaning in movement and investigate the significance of embodied cultural expressions as tools in the creation of ‘urban’ contemporary choreographic works. He has produced and performed works with his company Fore Im a Versatile Entertainer (F.I.V.E.) Productions LLC., Pilobolus, Raven-Symoné, The Marley Family, and Major Lazer to name a few. His more recent notable choreographic productions include YeBuna Alem/A Coffee World (Ireland, 2015) and Common Threads (Ethiopia, 2016). RAS Mikey’s works are a reflection of his life experience as he strives to use the expressive arts as a bridge for cultural understanding.
