Detroit-born Broadway legend Elaine Stritch dies

By Julie Hinds

89-year-old Emmy and Tony award-winning actress Elaine Stritch died July 16 at her home in Birmingham, MI. Although Stritch loved New York City, the home of her many stage triumphs, her final year was spent in her hometown region. In April 2013, Stritch received an Apple Award from Wayne State University at a Hilberry Theatre event. Prof. John Wolf, chair of WSU's theatre and dance department, said students who recognized her from 30 Rock were dazzled by stories of her close friends, legends like Noel Coward and Marlon Brando. "The impression I was always left with of Elaine was how quickly you came to love her," said Wolf. "She was a fighter and someone who persevered."
